Tobacco mosaic virus occupies a unique place in the history of virology and was in the forefront of virus research since the end of the nineteenth century. It wasthe German Adolf Mayer, working in the Netherlands, who in 1882 first described an important disease of tobacco which he called tobacco mosaic disease.
