Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, declared the independence of Bangladesh on March 26, 1971. His speech, which he made at his residence in Dhaka, called on the people of Bangladesh to fight for their freedom and independence from the oppressive rule of Pakistan.
This declaration is now commemorated every year as Bangladesh Independence Day, a national holiday of Bangladesh. The country waged a nine-month-long struggle for independence which ended with the liberation of Bangladesh on December 16, 1971, following a war with Pakistan.
