Cambodia was once called Kampuchea, which is from the Khmer language. Between 1979 and 1989 the official name of the country was The People's Republic of Kampuchea. In 1989, the name Cambodia was once again used to describe the country, and in 1993, the country officially became the Kingdom of Cambodia.
